Meet North Tahoe Local Luminary, Bill Watson!

Last updated: October 2025

Historian, CEO of Historic Thunderbird Lodge, Wooden-Boat Aficionado, Former Casino Technologist

Before overseeing operations at Thunderbird Lake Tahoe, Bill Watson spent nearly 30 years in the gaming industry. He began programming computers at age twelve. After his family moved from Puerto Rico to Las Vegas in his early teens, his technical skills led to a paid role inside the casino business. Over the course of his career in Las Vegas and Reno, Bill helped develop technologies casinos use to promote their business and operate their games.

In 2006, Mr. Watson stepped into a leadership role at the Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society. He was hired to pack up the property and prepare the buildings for demolition—a 90-day project. Instead, he focused on saving it. He ultimately helped raise nearly $10 million, and today Thunderbird is often described as Lake Tahoe’s de facto art and history museum—the iconic “Castle in the Sky.”

Thanks to Watson’s efforts, visitors can explore secret tunnels and private gardens while learning how technology—and even exotic animals—shaped Thunderbird’s 80-year story. The property reflects the eccentricities and conservation values of George Whittell Jr., perhaps the most colorful personality in Tahoe’s history. This summer, the Thunderbird Yacht returns to Lake Tahoe for the first time in four years with Bill Watson at the helm, sharing the region’s history with detail and conviction.

Mr. Watson also serves as General Manager of Red’s Ranch, a historic cattle and guest ranch at the base of the Ruby Mountains in eastern Nevada.

In Local Luminaries, Mr. Watson offers expert insight into the life of George Whittell Jr., the fascinating history of Thunderbird Lodge and the Thunderbird Yacht, and rare footage filmed over 60 years ago along the same crystal-blue shoreline we cherish today.

Whittell embraced modern tech—from an early movie projector to California’s first air-conditioning unit (which he built). The Thunderbird Yacht remains the pinnacle of that extravagance.
