Steely Dead is a Denver-based national touring band that seamlessly blends the precision arrangements of Steely Dan with the free-flowing, improvisational jams of the Grateful Dead. The quartet features musicians Dave Abear (guitar), Matt Abear (bass), Chris Sheldon (drums), and Dylan Teifer (keys). 

Musical Style and Performances

The band transcends the traditional tribute band format by creating a unique sonic hybrid. They marry Steely Dan’s complex jazz-rock harmonies and tightly structured studio recordings with the Grateful Dead’s expansive jams and exploratory song segues. 

The band often incorporates playful mashups and original transitions between the two legendary catalogs—such as blending the Grateful Dead’s “Deal” with Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years”.
